Selection by file

Principle

This selection method enables you to choose each desired identifier individually, and also enables you to create several maps in the same process.

Note on identifiers

Each element of the database has a name and an identifier, and both are alphanumerical.
Example for the departement 92 :

  • Identifier = "92"
  • Name = "Hauts-de-Seine"

Your text file must contain the desired identifiers (not their names).

Choosing the file

The button allows you to indicate to C&D Puzzle the location of the file you want to use.

The path to the selected file is displayed under the button and the first 100 lines of the file are shown in the window. The text area cannot be modified (you have to use a text editing program to modify the data).

The file is made up as shown below:

name1 92 93 94
name2 10120 10121 10122
name3 01 02 03

Each line of the file corresponds to a map to be created. This means that on each line, we should find:

  • the name of the file to be generated
  • the identifiers of the desired entities

The words can be separated by spaces, tabulations, or one of the separators checked to the right of the window. This means that the name of the file to be created must not contain any spaces.

Advanced functionalities

1) Export format

If you have C&D Puzzle Universel, you can choose to export your maps in the different formats allowed, which are selectable at the right of the screen.
Otherwise, the only allowed export format is VXF.

2) Subfolders

If there are a large number of maps to be created, Cartes & Données Puzzle enables you to place certain maps in a subfolder. To do this, use the following syntax:

Folder/name1 92 93 94
Folder/name2 10120 10121 10122
New_Folder/name3 01 02 03
Map_without_folder 51 52 53

The separator can be "/" or "\".

3) Partial identification

In certain cases, it can be useful to supply just the beginning of the identifier, instead of the full identifier.

For example, in France, the identifiers of the communes begin with the number of the departement. So to extract the communes of 3 departements, you only have to enter the numbers of the 3 departements, instead of the full list of communes. You also have to check: .

If the other box is checked, the identifier of an entity must correspond exactly to the one you supply, for it to be selected.

Examples of selection

1) You are using Carticque France 2007, and you have chosen the database : "Métropole". Your file contains just one line, as below :

Vaucluse,84

If you choose the communes as your exported level, the map created is called "Vaucluse.vxf" and contains all the communes whose INSEE code begins with 84: this gives you the map of Vaucluse by communes (the partial identification box must be checked).

If you choose the arrondissements as your inside level, the map created is called "Vaucluse.vxf" and contains all the arrondissements whose INSEE code begins with 84: this gives you the map of Vaucluse by arrondissements (the partial identification box must be checked).

This means that the same file can be used to generate different maps: it is the exported level that determines the map obtained (attention, this is not possible on a regional level, because the region numbers are not contained in the code numbers of the departements).

2) You are using Carticque Monde, and you have selected the database : "Provinces of the World". You want to extract the outlines of Italy and France in two different files and two different folders.
First you must choose the country as your exported level, and your file can be as shown below:

Italy/file_1,039
France/file_2,033

Then you just have to click on .

In the same way, the provinces have a code number beginning with the country code, so you can change the inside level to "Provinces", and obtain the provinces of France and Italy.
