Selection by list and map

Two methods for selecting geographical areas are available here : the selection by list and the selection by map.the two methods are shown into the screen and they are synchronized : once an entity is selected in the list, it is selected too in the map and inversely.

You can decrease the size of the map which will increase the size of the lists and inversly by using the horizontal splitter. If you work on a database that contains a lot of entities, we advise you to hide either the list or the map to improve the speed of your selection.

Selection by list

Principle

Each column contains the elements that are part of the selection in the previous column. If you select the Centre region, the departements column shows all the departements that make up this region.

Depending on the exported level, the columns that are not available are invalidated.

Multiple selection

To select several elements in a column, successively click on the items.

Note on identifiers

Each element of the database has a name and an identifier, and both are alphanumerical.
Example for the departement 92 :

  • Identifier = "92"
  • Name = "Hauts-de-Seine"

You can sort the columns by name or by identifier.

Other functions

: selects all the entities in the column.

: unselects all the entities in the column.

: choice of column sorting criterion.

Selection by map

Principle

The selection is made visually with the mouse pointer. A color is associated with each inside level. The list of colors is shown in the lower right-hand corner of the window.

Notion of level

In the selection by map, the manipulation on entities is done only in the current level.

At the launching of the database, you are always on the first level, here "France entière". To be able to select regions, the current level map must also be the regions map. Therefore you just have to select the "France entière" then to click on the button to see the regions.

Limitation :
On the example at the top of this page, the current map is the one of the departements (the Finistère and the Indre-et-Loire departements are selected). If you want to add a region in your selection, you must move to a higher level to select the desired region. But your departements selection will then be lost because you will be henceforth at regional level.
The selection by list enables to avoid this problem because the selection of entities can be done in any previous column without loosing the current selection.

Entities selection

There are several ways to select the desired entities:

  • Click on an entity with the mouse pointer.
  • Drag and drop using the mouse pointer to draw a rectangle.
  • Use the selection tools (rectangular, circular and free selection) :
  • Click on the button to select all the entities in the current level.

When an entity is selected, it is filled in with the color corresponding to its level (see the list of colors in the lower right-hand corner of the window).

Entities unselection

There are several ways to unselect the desired entities:

  • Click on a selected entity with the mouse pointer.
  • Drag and drop using the mouse pointer to draw a rectangle including selected entities.
  • Use the selection tools (rectangular, circular and free selection) on the already selected entities :
  • Click on the button to unselect all the entities in the current level.

To move to a more detailed level

Use the button to move down to a more detailed level.

You must have selected at least one entity in the current level to be allowed to move down. The map of the next level that will appear will correspond to the selected entities in the current level.

For example, if the Centre region is selected, when you click on this button, the new map that will appear is the map of the Centre region by departements.

To move to a less detailed level

To move up to a less detailed level, click on .

Attention, your selection in the current level will be lost.

The zoom functions

At each level change, if the Automatic zoom has been checked, the map is enlarged or reduced to enable the current selection to be seen as best as possible.

To change the map size manually, use the other zoom buttons:

  • : enlargement
  • : reduction
  • : page zoom (enables to show the full map)

Examples of selection

  • in the case of selection by map : click on the World, then on , then on Europe, then again on , then select the 3 countries by clicking on them.
